Study of the Saksahan River Coast in Kryvyi Rih: Possibilities of its Practical Use by Cossacks for Military and Strategic Purposes in the ХVІ–ХVІІ Centuries

The research focuses on the historical and geographical study of the Saksahan River coast within the territory of modern Kryvyi Rih, analyzing the potential ways in which this natural landscape could have been practically utilized by Ukrainian Cossacks during the ХVІ–ХVІІ Centuries for military and strategic purposes. The methodological framework combines field observations, determination of magnetic azimuths and directional angles, and analysis of natural barriers and lines of communication that could have influenced Cossack military campaigns. This approach enables the reconstruction of probable scenarios of reconnaissance activities, temporary camps, hidden crossings, and defensive positions along the river.
The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the Cossacks’ use of Kryvyi Rih’s local terrain has been insufficiently studied in both Ukrainian historiography and regional studies methodology. By situating the research within the broader context of the steppe frontiers (Dyke Pole), the study highlights how geography directly influenced the military art of the Cossacks, their ability to conduct raids, protect settlements, and coordinate larger campaigns.
The practical significance of this study is twofold. Firstly, it contributes to the development of local history and to a better understanding of Kryvyi Rih’s historical landscape. Secondly, it offers new perspectives for integrating regional geographical research into school-level historical education and patriotic upbringing. In the modern context, the legacy of the Cossacks and their military strategies serves not only as an example of heroism and resilience in defense of Ukrainian statehood, but also as an important element in the formation of national identity.
