Ascertainment of Ukrainian National Identity: Challenges, Achievements, Prospects

On April 3, 2025, a methodological seminar of the
National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine
was held on the topic “Strategic Guidelines and Innovative
Practices for Asserting Ukrainian National Identity
under Martial Law”. The event was co-organized by the
Department of Philosophy of Education, General and
Preschool Pedagogy of the National Academy of Pedagogical
Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute of Educational Problems
of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of
Ukraine. The methodological seminar was attended by well-known scientists M. I. Balatsenko, I. D. Bekh,
M. P. Vovk, N. V. Hontarenko, K. O. Zhurba, O. L. Karaman,
P. I. Kendzor, V. H. Kremen, V. I. Mokan, B. M. Senchenko,
S. O. Sysoeva, I. B. Chervinska, and representatives of
institutions of higher education, postgraduate education,
general secondary education, etc.
The article outlines the factors influencing the
formation or erosion of Ukrainian national identity
among children and youth, the impact of the war on the
process of national identity formation, and the key tasks
addressed by the Department of National and Patriotic
Education of the Institute of Educational Problems of the
National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine
in cooperation with central executive authorities, higher
education institutions, and general secondary education
institutions. Experimental work at the national, regional,
and institutional levels is seen as particularly important,
along with the development of content and methodological
support, and the organization of events and activities
involving children, parents, and teachers both in Ukraine
and abroad.
The fruitful scientific discussion of the participants
of the methodological seminar contributed to a deep
and comprehensive understanding of the problem of
forming national identity under martial law. During
the discussion, strategies and conceptual principles of
forming Ukrainian national identity, modern pedagogical
practices of patriotic education of youth, youth movements
and volunteerism, as well as issues of multicultural
education were updated.
