Abstract

A necessary condition for the successful education of students in a scientifc lyceum, including the natural and medical direction, is readiness to study. In our opinion, readiness for learning is based on motivation to learn, as an important psychological characteristic of the individual, and the level of the student's previous educational achievements. We studied the motivational component of readiness according to the method of E. Klimova. It turned out that a third of students who plan to enter scientifc lyceums of natural and medical felds are really interested in biology as a subject, among these students, many indicate that they are interested in studying biology because this subject helps them “touch science”, they want to work on scientifc works in the system of the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. An interesting fact is that a third of students consider mathematics to be the main subject for the development of their intellectual abilities. Most respondents note that the main motivation for entering scientifc lyceums of science and mathematics are practical and social motives, and cognitive preferences occupy a secondary role. In general, most students demonstrate high motivation to study at the scientifc lyceum. However, the educational achievements of these students are not benchmarks. Only 1 % of students who are already lyceum students have a high level of development of practical skills and abilities, that is, they are ready for further research activities. 80 % do not know how to work with laboratory equipment, which is undoubtedly a consequence of long online training. Almost a ffth of students do not know how to analyze the received data, and 80 % of students do not know how to solve problems. There are perceived problems with the conceptual apparatus. Almost 82 % of students do not understand the concepts of “biopolymers” and “nucleotides”, do not understand metabolic processes. Therefore, there is a signifcant lag in the level of readiness of students precisely in the parameter of previous educational achievements. According to this indicator, 43 % of 10th grade students and 41 % of 11th grade students have an initial level of readiness, which signifcantly complicates the study of these horseshoes.

We explain this disproportion by the fact that practical, social rather than cognitive motivation prevails among students. There are also problems in the content of the subject “biology”, in particular, there is a lack of unity in the defned basic concepts of the biology course, during the formation of concepts there is often no stage of clarifcation of features, interdisciplinary connections are implemented partially, little attention is paid to the performance of practical and laboratory work. We see the solution to these problems in the development of extracurricular natural and scientifc education.
