In teaching biology in secondary schools, teachers need to be creative, using modern visual aids and applying innovative pedagogical technologies to help keep children interested in learning a particular topic. Storytelling is one of teaching technologies that allows teachers to present educational information to students in an unobtrusive, informal format, which is better perceived and remembered, thus contributing to learning effectiveness.
The purpose of the article is to highlight the pedagogical experience of testing storytelling technology and its effectiveness in teaching 7th grade lyceum students. The authors have developed a storytelling lesson and a test to test the acquired knowledge on the topic “Mammals. Diversity of Mammals” and ‘Diversity of Mammals’. The lesson was conducted online in a synchronous mode on the Google Meet platform and was a classic digital storytelling: classic – the teacher tells and the children listen; digital – the story is accompanied by a presentation, video, pictures, etc.
The story tells about the fascinating journey of Brownie the elephant, who got acquainted with various mammals and the peculiarities of their care for their babies. Thus, the journey in a relaxed manner introduced students to interesting facts about the structure and life of representatives of certain mammalian orders and introduced them to the main lesson material.
The pedagogical study shows that storytelling technology is effective. The lesson contained a lot of new information that was difcult to absorb within 45 minutes, but thanks to the presentation of it in the form of a story, children perceived the educational material well and learned the topic: according to the test results, most students have a high level of knowledge. Thus, storytelling can not only interest students, but also motivate them to engage in cognitive activities and solve problems. Stories help to touch the deepest strings of children's souls and evoke emotions that activate their creative imagination, make them interested in learning the program material, and as a result, the educational, developmental, and educational goals of the lesson will be achieved.
