Comparative Analysis of the Presentation of the Topic “Common Fractions” in Mathematics Textbooks from Different Years

This article analyzes mathematics textbooks and
manuals from various years that cover the topic of
“Common Fractions”. The relevance of this topic lies
in the fact that education in Ukraine has undergone
significant transformations. Through the lens of a single
topic, the study examines how its presentation has evolved
in textbooks and manuals written by different authors
over time.
The young researcher aimed to analyze mathematics
textbooks from mathematical, historical, and linguistic
perspectives. The article also explores the reinterpretation
of traditional problems in accordance with the New
Ukrainian School (NUS) concept.
The New Ukrainian School is a key reform of the
Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Its main
goal is to create a school environment that is pleasant
for students and equips them not only with knowledge but
also with the ability to apply it in everyday life.
By analyzing numerous textbooks and teaching aids
from different years, the author was able to observe the
evolution of the Ukrainian language in mathematics
education materials over the past century.
However, in terms of content, the theoretical sections
of textbooks have undergone relatively few changes. The
primary transformation lies in the methods of presenting
the material. It is noteworthy that modern NUS textbooks
offer content in a more accessible form, particularly
through algorithms.
If a student misses one or more lessons (due to
illness, air raid alerts, or other reasons) and needs to
study the material at home, the theoretical content is
presented in an extremely clear and simple manner –
using visual aids such as diagrams, tables, cues, and
worked examples.
To prepare for comprehensive final assessments,
textbooks provide self-check tasks in the form of quizzes.
In our opinion, solving these tasks helps students recall
the main types of exercises covered in each topic.
Modern textbooks include a rich selection of exercises
aimed at developing key competencies such as ecological
literacy and responsible attitudes toward nature, as
well as fostering a healthy and safe lifestyle. There is
also a wide variety of tasks designed to develop other
competencies – including social and civic awareness,
knowledge in the fields of natural sciences, technology,
engineering, culture, digital and financial literacy, and
innovation.
