Practical Lessons for Deepening and Developing Cartographic Competence

Abstract

The purpose of the proposed methodical development is to connect theory with practice in geography lessons and deepen students' practical skills in working with topographic maps.

The development is dedicated to the study of the topic “Topographic map” in the school geography course, the development of tasks on topography for the 8th grade and the game “Make a map” for the 6th grade on the topic “Ways of depicting the Earth”, solving various tasks based on the topographic map and the possibility of using them in extracurricular activities, namely competitions in topography, orienteering, etc. The tasks are made for maps of different scales (1 : 25,000, 1 : 50,000, 1 : 100,000), which is much more interesting for children than working only with a 1 : 25,000 map. Having ready answers, the teacher can quickly
check the works, summarize the work of teams or individual students.

The key provisions of the work can be used for further research on this issue, which has a practical nature and methodological direction. They will be useful for methodologists, geography teachers, as well as for pedagogues-organizers. 

The topic “Topographic map” occupies a special place in the course of physical geography of Ukraine and in the school course in particular. It expands knowledge about the map as one of the main sources of geographic information, and also deepens practical skills in using geographic maps and cartographic material in geography classes, teaches to navigate the area and describe it with the help of large-scale maps. This topic also has a professional direction, since during its study students get acquainted with the peculiarities of such professions as cartographer, surveyor, topographer, etc. It is worth noting that this topic is one of the most difcult. This is due to the fact that students have to learn new concepts, as well as learn how to practically work with a topographic map.
