У статті описано результати аналізу наукових спроб означити інтелект від античних часів до сьогодення. За результатами виконаного аналізу підсумовано, що нині ми не маємо адекватного визначення інтелекту, яке охоплювало б усю палітру інтелектуальної діяльності людини. Насамперед, це пов’язано з тим, що інтелект як психічний феномен надзвичайно складний за своєю структурою. З іншого боку, наукове визначення інтелекту наштовхується на супротив його специфічне трактування в різних культурах та етносах. Врешті, запропоновані наукові терміни, які торкаються суті інтелекту, суттєво деформуються внаслідок їх побутового використання
