Abstract

The article provides a review of approaches to the identifcation of academically gifted students. The main directions of identifcation of academic talent are presented. Psychodiagnostics tests for identifying academically gifted students, widely used in the West, are described. Models of identifcation of academically gifted students are given. Similar and distinctive  features of academic and creative talent are analyzed.

The article describes that the identifcation of students as gifted and talented for enrollment in special subjects, i.e., the overall review resulted in an almost 70 % increase in the total number of students recognized as academically gifted. Various defnitions of giftedness are given and the author offers his own defnition of a gifted personality.

It is described in detail that gifted students are individuals who are passionate about a certain idea or type of activity, which involves their search activity and directs their actions to the knowledge and mastery of the subject of interest to them.

The article presents mega-models of talent development, lists the authors who created this model and identifed seven principles of talent development. 

The identification of academically gifted students in the West was analyzed. It was revealed that a very important role in this is played by school psychologists, who can both provide ongoing support to gifted students and develop talents. Described that Western school psychologists can implement and use assessment systems to identify academically gifted students, as well as any other students who are identified as academically gifted and selected for the Education for the Gifted and Talented (GATE) program. It was revealed that Universal screenings and ongoing assessment of school performance are useful tools in the process of identifying the gifted.
